Work package 1.6 Relationship between microbial community structure and biofilms as characterised through analysis of extracellular polymeric substances

Characterisation of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) present in biofilms together with characterisation of the microbial population will improve our understanding in the role that EPS have in microbial community structure and functionality for a range of substrates (soils and livestock-derived C sources). A range of new analytical techniques, including near and mid infra-red spectroscopy, will be developed for EPS characterisation as well as HPLC_MS and other spectrophotometric techniques.
