The SoilCIP currently holds a BBSRC Doctoral Training Grant and has applied for a further grant. We train many visiting scientists at post-degree and post-doctoral level through British Council, Royal Society and Rothamsted International funding, and with funding from sending countries.
The SoilCIP offers unique opportunities to DTG students because of its broad, cross-disciplinary mission and its integrated research agenda covering basic, strategic and applied science linked through to both knowledge exchange and extension activities. Generic training, as specified by the Roberts Report, is undertaken at Rothamsted Research and with the partner HEIs. SoilCIP students participate in appropriate parts of the Institutes' and HEI's training programmes, but also look beyond to acquire the most appropriate training that will deliver researchers with the skills and knowledge demanded by the industry. We note the requirements for training developed from the Warry Report and the Leitch Review of Skills that the research training in DTGs must be demand-led and derive long-term economic impact. SoilCIP supervisors are closely involved with end users through their professional body, the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists, through its Research Association, and through direct Knowledge Exchange with agronomists and farmers, as described above.
